What is Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) Program?
The Victorian Energy Upgrades Program (VEU) previously known as the Victorian Energy Efficiency Target (VEET), started back in 2009. Essential Services Commission (ESC) introduced this program. The main aim of the program was to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as to cut electricity bills. For this purpose, the government of Victoria started giving away energy-efficient products to the Victorian consumers as an incentive.
The consumers then started saving on the electricity bills & the government started meeting its targets to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gasses. So, the program then proved to be a win-win for both the government & the consumers.
Since 2009, the government of victoria has reduced around 60Million tonnes of gas emissions so far under this VEU scheme. It is estimated that by 2025, the households and businesses in Victoria will be able to save up to $1100 to $74000 per annum respectively.

How does the Victorian Energy Upgrade Program work?
The Victorian government works with its accredited providers (APs) as part of its VEU program. These accredited providers are the suppliers of energy-efficient products. When Victorian households or businesses get their upgrades done, these accredited providers generate an e-certificate.
Each certificate indicates the reduction of one ton of greenhouse gas emissions that would have otherwise been released into the atmosphere. After that, these certificates are sold to energy retailers by accredited providers.
The certificates are then utilized by energy retailers to meet the Victorian Government’s annual emissions targets. The incentive or discount that is provided to homeowners and businesses depends on the market activity and the cost of the certificates.
